Lovely prizes, Cindy! Come take a look at my blog, OK?

There is actually a product out there where you could totally cover over the bricks. No painting the bricks. It would be like like building a box over all the bricks. It looks terrific and the bricks stay in place.

Do you want to totally redo your fireplace, like cover or paint the bricks and/or mantle or do you just want ideas on how to display on the mantle?

I think I would like to totally re-do the fireplace with paint...maybe like what is on the walls...then paint the mantle a white. I really don't know. Should I leave it like it is...change the mirror...paint it? What would look nice on the mantle?

I would not change that gorgeous mantle.

Here's a suggestion for a vintage, aged look. I can send you pics of the final project if you like. get a giant tub of drywall compound, a wide 12" wallpaper spatula and glob the stuff over the bricks , it makes it look like old, ancient plaster. Trowel it on thick but then flatten and smooth it over with the wide blade. It's like frosting a giant cake. Watch that the blade edges do not leave sharp lines in the compound. If you do this right, you will not need to sand it.

I love this stuff and covered my entire brick fireplace with it and guests are stunned it used to be brick as now it is a smooth but aged masterpiece. Some tea stain glaze over the dried plaster and you will think you were in Versailles!

Depending on your style and what feels right for you, you might paint the mantle a warm creamy vanilla- sand it down in areas to show the beautiful dark tones underneath. Or after the plastering and staining- the mantle might work exactly as it is.

Next I might put a big tray of cream and white candles in the fireplace- this allows you to "use" the fireplace in warmer months and it looks fabulous when entertaining. I'd lose the mirror, and replace it with a large, vintage frame for architectual interest. I like your collection of pottery, so maybe rearrange them and add a torn piece of lace underneath the vases- hanging off the corner a bit.

Good Luck- and take a chance!

Wow- fabulous prizes!!! I love white so if it were my fireplace, I would paint both the bricks and the mantle white, but two different shades of white that compliment one another. I would add a fancier mirror- maybe a vintage one or several smaller mirrors- the vintage kind with beveled edges and no frames. I would definitely keep those lovely pieces of creamware there and maybe add a few more little pastel bits and baubles. But I just found your blog and have no idea of your tastes and preference for colors so I'm just suggesting what I would do. :D

I may have just posted my ideas in the wrong place. I posted in the last post. I forgot to say though that I would definitely get rid of the mirror. I think it distracts from the beauty of the fireplace. If I were to put a mirror there it would be placed in an old window frame or something of that sort. Super prizes! I've been thinking of making a paper bag album but just haven't gotten around to it. Good luck and I hope you find just the idea you are looking for to help with the redo. xoxo
