I am going to have a decorating contest. I have a fireplace that I don't know what to do with it. If you have any ideas on how to change the look of the fireplace or what to do with it, post them here on my blog. On May 15th, I will award prizes to the person's idea that I will be going with. So...look at the picture, put on your thinking caps and lets get to work!! I am going to also post pictures of the prizes I will be giving away...so stay tuned!

Well, if Dawn and Cindy are helping you, you've got it made. They have the coolest things in their shop to decorate your fireplace with!! Even though I've never been, I love seeing what's new at the shop through their blog. You could paint the fireplace white, then add ironstone, a pretty wreath, to change seasonally, the possibilities are endless. Let me give it some more thought and I'll write again.

OK, my suggestion would be to paint the brick, but not a solid color. Pick about three colors, one of which would be very similar to the wall color and then to give the brick a mottled effect, with rags or scruffy brush. Step back, look at it. See if you need to use a small scruffy brush and use the lightest color to accent the mortar (sp?) between the bricks. Be sure to tape off all wood work of the mantle first of course. When you're finished. Look at it. See how you like the wood finish of the mantle with the new brick finish. If you don't like the darkness of the mantle, visualize it with a white mantle (matching your crown moulding). At this point you decide to paint it or not. Be sure and lightly sand, prime it several coats until no dark is showing (sand lightly between each coat of primer) Then top if off with a beautiful coat of white trim paint, in the finish (satin, semi-gloss or high-gloss) that your crown moulding is in. After this project is finished, then you could decide what you'd place on the mantle and above it. I'd love to see some tall springs of greenery shooting out of that large ivory vase too!

Wow! I found you through The Feathered Nest! What a beautiful mantle you have! I envy it! I do love the natural color of brick, and I love dark stained wood, so I have to chuckle that I would leave it the way it is -- I would just load it up with treasures! Perhaps two old prism-dripping wall sconces on either side, attached to the wall. Tall candles on the mantle, so you can see the candlelight flicker in the mirror. Coming from where I do (Cape Cod), I'd add starfish standing upright on the mantle, perhaps an old wooden ship model (not too big). A conch shell on the brick on the floor. Perhaps an old toleware match tin... just a few thoughts! =)

I was wondering what the colors/style of your room are..... but without knowing that, here's what I'd do.
I'd paint the brick & mantle creamy white -- then paint the trim on the mantle white or a pale version of whatever color you use in your room...... I'd replace the mirror with a wreath, something soft and floral .... put some candlesticks on the right, some of your other pretties on the left, perhaps with some lace trim beneath them (running the length of the mantel)......
I would go for a soft & soothing look.....

Cindy, thank you for the kind comments about our store and linking us on your blog. I am really thinking hard on this mantel contest, not just for the prize, but for the challenge. I also have to say I think you may have been in my second grade class, unless you just look like we all did back then.
I am with Beachy. That mantle is great and so is the brick. What I think makes it look stark is the white walls around it! I'd cosy some huge plants on either side and get a really nice old or handmade fireplace cover for summer and also a colorful rug in front of it. Thats all :)
I think your mantel is beautiful and if you have any other dark wood in you room I would keep it dark. Then I would try dry brushing some off white on some of the bricks to lighten them a little. If possible I think I would cover the brick over the mantel with drywall and paint to match the walls. If you leave the top brick I would paint the window frame to match the crown moulding and add a wreath to the frame. I'd also put something tall and light colored that connects with your decore on the hearth to add balance to the darker areas.
